Moroccan trains are easy to use and connect to many of the most popular tourist spots. One of these hot spots is Fez, the imperial city in the north of the country, known for its old medina and colourful leather tanneries. Fez station is relatively small, but offers efficient connections to many major destinations, including Casablanca, Tangier, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech.

There are several ways to buy tickets for train travel in Morocco. You usually don’t need to book in advance as there are a lot of services and cars are rarely full. As a result, it is easier to buy tickets if you arrive at the station in time to buy them at the ticket office before your scheduled departure. However, if you plan to travel during peak holiday periods, a reservation may be required. You can buy tickets in person at the station a few days in advance, or ask your travel agent or hotelier to arrange them for you.

Most Moroccan trains are divided into first and second class compartments. The first class has six seats, while the second class compartments are somewhat crowded with eight seats. The price difference between the two classes is minimal and if you book the first class. You have the advantage of being able to reserve a specific place. It’s a bonus if you especially want to sit in the aisle or if you can’t wait to admire the Moroccan landscape from a porthole. In second class, places are allocated according to availability.
If you are traveling on a normal day (i.e. not during peak holiday periods), you probably still have a choice of seats.
